Art in the Streets of Londontown

I finally had a free afternoon and decided to fill it up by exploring a new area of London: Shoreditch in the East End.

This area is known for a street called "Brick Lane" and it is filled with hundreds of Curry Houses. In the same area are some fantastic works of street art. For the past few years, every city that I have gone to, I've tried to go on a street art tour because it is one of my favorite ways to see an area. I feel like street art and graffiti are such a unique part of cities and that there are some really beautiful walls out there. London did not disappoint.

We took about a 3 mile walk around and saw some great pieces. The history behind the works is so fascinating and the relationships among the artists is interesting too. One of my favorite artists is a guy who does words that look like they are made out of mylar balloons. It looks so authentic and 3D.

I also love a lot of the political pieces and ones that are trying to shed some light on a current hot topic or injustice. There always seems to be a reason for the piece, a story that wants to be shared.

This piece, for example has been painted in an area that has a large neighborhood of Muslims and it is hoping to create a sense of unity and acceptance amongst different groups in the area.
