Chasing Pavement

My Running Story

If you had told me four years ago that I'd be at one point in my life training for a half marathon, I would have given you this face:

Me? Run? On purpose? For Fun??!

That's Ridiculous.

However, when my Grandfather got sick and our family hunkered down in his rural Ohio town during his illness, I found myself bored with not much to do. No cable, no internet, no gym (yes, this was still 2013).

But I did have cell phone service and somehow stumbled upon the Nike Running app. I had a few runner friends who were always posting updates on their runs and their training for various races. It always looked fun, but not fun enough to actually do.

Seriously, only crazy people run without being chased.

However, after spending a few days running around the highway (yes, highway) I found myself starting to enjoy being outside and watching my times on the Nike app. I downloaded the Couch to 5K app and really tried to follow it.

I failed a few times, but actually stuck with it.

I ran my first 5k just a few months later and seriously thought I was going to die. I remember running the entire time thinking, "This is stupid. This is really stupid"

But as soon as I crossed that finish line, I felt the rush that all runners feel. That sense of accomplishment and that desire to do it again. I ended up signing up for two 10Ks and thought I'd be good with that.
Wrong again.

After I had run a few more 5 and 10Ks, a friend put it in my head that it was time to run a Half.

"She's crazy," I told myself.

I had run a half marathon before. In high school, for gym credit. And it had been horrible. I don't think I could move for a week (I also didn't train for it. At. All.)

The Oakland Running Festival puts on a weekend of races in March each year and I figured, one late night: Why not? Signed up and there you have it.

Now I spend way to many hours reading blogs, looking up races and figuring out how to push myself even more.

A marathon may be in my future.

Someday.
(But not today.)
